The Return of Maxwell
The BET Awards left me wondering where Maxwell has been hiding the last 7 years. No longer rockin the natural fro, but now sporting the low boy, he will always play an important role as an artist in the neo-soul genre. He hasn’t had an album since Now released in 2001. For some reason I knew that wonderful voice of his was not retired. Although, there has not been much publicity around the subject, Maxwell will be releasing an album this year! Actually, he is expected to release an album every year for the next three years. It is part of his newest project entitled Black Summers’ Night. The first album, Black, will release in 2008, followed by Summers’ in 2009 and Night in 2010. Here is a snippet of Pretty Wings, a single from Black…Gave me chills

First of all I would like to say that I am also really excited to see that Maxwell is making a comeback. He was also looking really nice on the BET Awards. Anyways, I listened to “Pretty Wings” and had mixed feelings about the song. The song was very pretty and of course almost gave me chills. But at times I thought the lyrics sounded a little suicidal in one part…… Interesting huh!?!. My interpretation of the song was that the girl’s spirt had died and Maxwell was heartbroken by her because she left him. I said suicidal because of the following line …
“oh u played me dirty ur game was so bad
u toyed with my affliction had to fill out my prescription
found the remedy i had to set u free ”
Think about it……..
But overall the song is a nice pretty song. And Maxwell is still a great artist. However, I dont know if I would release this song as his first track. Especially not for radio airplay. Maybe for the third or fourth release. What is your interpretation? I still say a little suicidal…lol.

I am a STAN for two people….Maxwell and MJB!!!!! I was all over the palce when he came out singing Simply Beautiful (which happens to be my favorite Al Green song).
I have been hearing about these 3 albums for some time now, so I am a little skeptical. I would think if something was really coming out in 08 we would hear more tracks on the radio right? Anyway I hope he comes out soon…..maybe this pop up on the BET awards was just to remind us of who he is and let us know more is forthcoming…..I sure hope so!

First, in response to PsychC, the girl is not dead. Or at least that is not how i heard it. I thought Maxwell was singing that the guy in the song was in a stagnant relationship. He loved her. He gave her all of him, for her to only play him. As a result, he had to let her go and see what love was like without her… Then again, that was only MY take
Secondly, in response to epiphanyblog, I absolutely LOVE Maxwell. I don’t think it will take much time for people to get excited about his album release. When people hear the name Maxwell, they will run to the store to purchase or hop on their computer to download this album. Another little tad bit of info…Maxwell is a Board member of BET! I’m SURE he won’t have a problem promoting his album after he has filmed the video for his first release.

Somewhere down the line the relationship began to fall apart. This song explores the complexity of relationships. Its not always whos right and whos wrong all the time. Its not always balck and white per say but gray areas inbetween. My interpretation is that the guy messed up. Exactly how is not unknown but the relationship was betrayed. Trust was broken and it attempts to reconcile its seemed more damage was done on her part probably to get back at him in a sense and also her struggle with her feelings. He is struggling with his emotions as well. Its a bittersweet perdicament. You love this person but its hurting you to stay and it hurts even more to let go. But the question is which one do you go with? and do you even have a choice??? He knows he has to let her go because their love is not the same and most likely it wont ever be the same. The question is will they cross paths again later on. I dont think its at all suicicidal or one sided as far as the person making mistakes and inflicting pain. Its a beautiful song about a very “REAL” and difficult struggle. But thats just my interpretation.
