Telephone

by Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce: I don’t even know where to begin with this mess. I remember when Lady Gaga came out about a year ago, and I really liked her music. After the MTV Video Music Awards when she came out dressed in bizarre outfits and blood all over her body, my liking of her began to dwindle. I feel like she, or anyone else for that matter, shouldn’t have to do all the extra-ness to get people to listen to her music or be interested in her. To talk about her? Maybe…but it’s not necessary! The music alone should speak for itself.

This video presents her biggest debacle to date! I heard a few people mention this video a few days ago but I thought nothing of it. I really thought people made the mistake of calling the video Telephone when they really meant Video Phone – which is Beyonce’s previous single. I finally became intrigued enough to search for the video today, and I was shocked. To even watch the video you have to be 18 or older and have a YouTube account to login. That’s just to watch the video…because it’s that explicit!

After being uploaded for only seven days, there are already more than 20+ MILLION views! And the video is almost ten minutes long! That’s a mini movie – like the kind Michael Jackson used to make back in the day. Yet, this mini movie is straight clownery. Lady Gaga has no self respect and with 10 layers of makeup on, she looks ridiculous. I’m trying to figure out what made Beyonce want to be a part of this song/video!?! I can understand the ‘you be in my video, I’ll be in yours’ deal they probably made, but sometimes you have to put your foot down. Bey just lost some cool points and entered a lower class level in my book by being in this video. My guess is that her hubby, Jay, pushed her to be in this video due to the publicity she would get by being associated with Lady Gaga. Yep – that’s my story and I’m sticking with it!

I could dwell on so many parts of the video that are whack…. the name of the Bey’s truck (Pu**ywagon – what the hell?), Tyrese’s guest appearance (dude – are you really not getting any more movie roles that you have to stoop so slow and be in a LG video?)…I won’t even say anymore. I’ll let you watch this craziness below.

Freakum Dress + Luam

I checked in with Luam’s YouTube page to get the latest and greatest in her choreography. I’ve been slipping because I have clearly missed 3 videos being uploaded! This is the first and I didn’t get past this one to see the rest. This video is a great portrayal of how Luam brings all different races, sexes, and ethnicities together all for the love of music + dance. The choreography is on point as always but the song choice literally made me get up out of my seat and dance. I hadn’t heard Freakum Dress in a hot minute. The choreography made me want to put on my heels and parade around the house – minus the freakum dress…I’ll leave that for my weekend outing.

My Recap of the Grammys

Lady Gaga. She opened the show and was a hot mess! I loved Lady Gaga’s music until I saw her perform months ago. She is just too much. She does all of this with her outfits only to be talked about the next day. That’s a good marketing plat. But, she can not perform! If you look at the replay of her performanc, she is super stuff! Then, she pulls Elton John into her performance and he has all kinds of dust, paint and mess on his face with sparkle sunglasses on. #FAIL!

Green Day. A Whoooooole lot of people on stage, but a good performance and great harmonies. The drummer was so into it!

Beyonce.. She made me confused. She didn’t accept her award, which she received right before her performance, but could perform. #FAIL. Her weave looked a mess. Homegirl can sang tho because she tore the stage up! She sang If I were a Boy, but I’m sure I was not the only one expecting something else…like Put A Ring on It. Then, she sang a cover of Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know. It was bomb too because I love that song. What was with her rolling around on her knees though? That was a mess! P.S. Jay-Z I think you better take note of Bey’s song selection. She aint singing these hate songs for nothing.

Pink. I remember Pink from way back – when she had Pink hair. I don’t know what it is with her know. Barely no clothes on. When will people realize that sex is not the only way to sell!?! Besides not knowing a single word she said, her performance was awesome. I don’t know if she was actually singing, but even if she was lip synching – having to do all that while twirling from the ceiling and looking graceful is enough! She must be taking some kinda intro into Cirque de Soleil class because that’s the second time she’s done a circus act performance. Get it girl.

Black Eyed Peas. I was so excited to see the Black Eyed Peas perform, but looks like they needed another week of practice. They sang my jam Imma Be, but when they mixed tracks to sing I Got a Feeling, the beat got allllll messed up. It took the band 5 seconds too long to catch the beat! They did get me crunk tho. Can’t hate on the BEP because I love them :/

Lady Antebellum. I never heard of the group, but their song, I Need You Now, was nice. I’ll be downloading their album tomorrow…

Zac Brown Band. Don’t remember too much about their performance. However, they did win Best New Artist, which I don’t understand how. The Ting Tings or MGMT should have taken that award. I guess I can give them props because they are from Georgia. On to the next…

Taylor Swift + Stevie Nicks = Super Fail! Taylor was super flat and sounded a ham! I can’t believe they sang one song together, and then Stevie picks up a tambourine. You give a legend like that a tambourine and you need to get kicked off stage! Stevie should have run that show and had Taylor on as backup.

MJ Tribute. What about Us? Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Smokie Robinson: The first real performance of the night! 5 great singers. Well rehearsed. In tune. Flawless.

Bon Jovi. NO performance can compare to the MJ tribute. It was hard to focus after the tribute. Jennifer Nettles performed. Bon Jovi performed Living on A Prayer – which was chosen by the fans watching at home during the show.

Mary J. Blige. She sang Bridge Over Troubled Waters with Andrea Bocelli. Mary is always classy and the performance was a great duet. This was grown folks music. Not that immature, childish mess that dominates mainstream media.

Dave Matthews Band. He’s. Still. Hot. He had a stage full of artists, musicians, and singers all up there to perform with him. I don’t know the last time the Dave Matthews Band was nominated for a Grammy, but they will always be welcome to sing at the Grammys in my book. They are a staple of American music culture. I don’t have their latest album, but the performance of You and Me was great. Will be getting tomorrow…

Maxwell. Performing live sounds just like the album version. Whew Lawd! He performed Pretty Wings and I just watched in amazement. Definitely not the best he could have been because his voice was a little hoarse, but he did exceptionally well. The performance ended with a collaboration with Roberta Flack singing Where is the Love? Roberta’s voice is unchanged, sounding exactly the same as she did years ago. I pray for her because her health does not appear to be the same as she was somewhat stiff on stage and did not move. She was amazing to be performing at 72 years old. Please appreciate and recognize this musical legend while she is still with us on Earth.

I think Jeff Beck performed but I missed it. Oopps. Had to warm up a snack.

Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem, and Travis Barker on the drums. This was one of the hottest performances of the night! I was super crunk when listening. I just needed the sound to be there 100% and it wasn’t. I don’t know if the performance was censored or if there was connection issues, but we didn’t wait all night to have the sound go out. JUST WHACK!

Its 11:45 now…I’m out!

Halo

by Beyoncé: Traditionally, I was not a Beyoncé fan as she turned Destiny’s Child to Beyoncé and Friends. However, with each solo album that she releases I like her music more and more. My good friend over at hair-sugar sent me the link to this video earlier, and I tell you it broke me down! I heard the track on Bey’s album, I Am…Sasha Fierce, and I liked it, but I believe the video takes the lyrics to a new level! Everytime I watch this video it makes me cry.  The first time I watched it was at work and it had me with tears pouring by 1:37 in! The video reminds of the relationship between my boyfriend and I and is such a great depiction of love, friendship, admiration, and respect. If I wanted to put my two cents in I would suggest the chemistry between Michael Ealy and Bey is amazing. I couldn’t even imagine Jay Z in this video, and I definitely don’t envision him as the sensitive supportive husband type. If you are a female, sensitive in the least bit, and madly in love – I would say you need a tissue before watching ;) She also released the video for Diva, but I felt this track was worthy of a solo post!

My Diamond

by Ne-Yo: People always make comments that Ne-Yo would be non existent if it wasn’t for Michael Jackson because he is forever sampling M.J.’s hits. Today I will agree! I came across this song and I thought Ne-Yo was about to re-make Lady in My Life since he opens this track with these words. However, he continues to add new words to create a different song. The melody of this track is really calming and nice; it kind of reminds me of Flaws and All by Beyonce, which is one of my top fave songs (I will probably make a post about that song soon)! The words in this track are ok but it seems like something is missing. I really like Ne-Yo as an artist, song-writer and producer, but this song just does not do anything for me. I hope this is only a track that has leaked and Ne-Yo has no intention of putting it on his next album!

I Am…Sasha Fierce

by Beyoncé: I’ve debated posting this because I have never been the biggest Bey fan. Now, I love her music and home girl is a fierce dancer but as a person she has always posed several questions in my head like…why was it necessary to kick Kelly and Latavia out of the original Destiny’s Child to make Beyonce and Friends with Kelly and Michelle. I have a little more respect for her as a solo artist because that is what she wanted from the beginning. Anyways…time for the music. I have had this album for a week now and today was the first day I listened to I Am… because Sasha Fierce is that hot! Let me break it down for those who may not have the album. Beyonce’s two dic album, I Am…Sasha Fierce, was released this Tuesday. I Am features mostly ballads and the tracks are calm. I also think Beyonce has tapped into some new genres with I Am. I wouldn’t expect a few of these tracks from her, such as Disappear, but I really like the songs. I do not necessarily like every track on I Am, but that is when I click through to Sasha Fierce which features the more upbeat club bangers. BOMB from beginning to end. I’m jamming at work singing “I’m in love with my radio” and “I’m a Diva best believe”….It is hard for me to choose a favorite song and I would have to say it is a tie between Sweet Dreams or Hello. Then again, depending on how I’m feeling my favorite track may be Diva. I obviously can’t pick a song as my favorite to play a video below. However, I have been watching this fierce video for the last week. All I can say is I need to call him for dance lessons!

The Finale of TRL

Today marks a sad day in history. Well it was a glorious day because Barack had his first interview on 60 Minutes after being nominated President-elect. However, today was the finale of TRL. When I interned at MTV last summer, the rumor that the show was near its end date was buzzing around the offices, but I never thought the rumor was true. From running home after school to watching the top ten countdown during the summer, I grew up watching the show. I think TRL helped foster my love for music. All the hottest videos premiered on TRL before I saw them anywhere else.  I would tape all of *N Sync and Britney Spear’s videos and learn the dances. I would also record videos and memorize the lyrics – clearly this was before lyric websites were established. As a child, I wanted to be VJ! That was the hottest job on the streets! If anybody asked me today, “If you could have one job in the world what would it be?” My response will continue to be, “A MTV VJ.”

I’m glad Carson Daly came back to host the finale. I will be completely honest and voice my opinion that TRL went downhill after Damien took Carson’s place. There are a lot of other celebrities that stopped by to participate in what a few have called “a high school reunion” as numerous young artists’ careers flourished after being on TRL. The show was opened by Beyonce and included performances by Fall Out Boy, Ludacris, Snoop, and Nelly, as well as appearances by Diddy, Kid Rock, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, and the list goes on and on. Then, there were so many people outside, the streets looked like NYC on New Years Eve. The show will definitely be missed :(

If you didn’t get the opportunity to watch the finale, I suggest watching MTV over the next few days. You KNOW they will repeat this about 4 times over the time period.

Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) & If I Were A Boy

by Beyonce: I took a mini vacation and ended up taking a vacation from life! I’ve been slacking by not making a post in 5 days! So unlike me, but I had a great reason for doing so :)  Never being a B fan, I do listen to her tracks to give her the benefit of the doubt. My great friend put me on Single Ladies yesterday and at first I was disappointed in my friend’s music choice. It really reminded me of Get Me Bodied and in my mind – so not original! On the site where I listened to the track, there were two listed and I found out that B wants her fans to pick the first single off her new album. I didn’t really like either, but I was intrigued when I saw the video for Single Ladies before The Hills came on. During a commercial, I looked up the video and I revoked my disappointment. This video is the bomb and it makes the song! The second track to choose from, If I Were A Boy, also has a video and transforms the lyrics to a visual statement. The song is very nice and has a good message, but I don’t think it would be successful as a “first single.” It could get radio play, but it won’t be played in the club. And we all know…the club bangers are the hits! You can decided for youself. Which would you choose?
